Global Solar-Powered Walkways Development News Collection

2023-05-25

In April 2023, Dexter Community Schools in Michigan, USA, announced the launch of a community fundraising campaign, planning to build a solar-powered walkway and a solar field around the school bus hub. This project is led by students and supported by school educators and the school board, aiming to provide sustainable energy for surrounding schools and at the same time provide practical educational opportunities for students. The solar-powered walkway can not only supply electricity to school buildings and reduce energy costs but also provide shade protection for students waiting for buses. The project bidding process was completed before May 24, 2023, and it is planned to supply electricity to the school in the summer of 2024. All donations are eligible for tax deductions, which will be fully used for walkway construction and solar module installation.

In November of the same year, the Cobham Drive Walkway in Wellington, New Zealand, completed the upgrade of its solar lighting system. The walkway is 1.3 kilometers long and runs along Evans Bay. Due to its proximity to the coast, it faces the challenges of strong winds and seawater corrosion all year round. Therefore, the solar photovoltaic poles have been reinforced in the factory and added with a powder coating to resist seawater erosion. The walkway adopts "turtle-friendly" LED lighting with a color temperature of 2200K, and is also equipped with bird-proof devices and side baffles to avoid light leakage affecting the surrounding penguin habitats. Each solar photovoltaic pole has 8 built-in batteries, which can achieve 6 days of independent power supply, and is also equipped with a SIM card for remote monitoring and maintenance, taking into account environmental protection, practicality and ecological protection needs.

Summary of Solar-Powered Walkway Development in 2023

In 2023, the global solar-powered walkways field ushered in rapid development. Europe became the core region for project landing. Countries such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany successively launched pilot projects, achieving multiple breakthroughs in technological optimization, scenario adaptation and environmental benefits. From sidewalks to cycle paths, from urban parks to campus scenarios, the application scope has been continuously expanded. These projects generally adopt solar modules with high durability and high conversion efficiency, combined with recycled materials, intelligent monitoring and other technologies, realizing "double use of space" and "double sustainability", which not only provide clean electricity for cities but also do not affect the original traffic and landscape functions.
