Industry News Overview of Solar Panel Mounting Kits

2023-04-22

In 2023, the global energy transition process continued to accelerate, and renewable energy became the core force in addressing climate change. As one of the most popular clean energy sources, solar energy drove steady development in the supporting solar panel mounting kits industry. Throughout the year, the industry showed a diverse trend of expanding market scale, iterative technological upgrading, continuous policy support, and intensified enterprise competition. Significant phased breakthroughs were achieved in product innovation, market layout, policy standardization, and application scenario expansion.

Steady Growth in Market Scale and Sustained Release of Global Demand

According to data released by Verified Market Research, the global market size of solar panel mounting systems (including mounting kits) reached 21.24 billion US dollars in 2023, providing solid demand support for the development of the mounting kits industry. It is estimated that the market size will climb to 28.19 billion US dollars by 2031, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.6% from 2024 to 2031. The growth in demand is mainly driven by the global emphasis on renewable energy and the continuous increase in investment in solar power generation infrastructure. Both large-scale centralized photovoltaic power plants and distributed residential and industrial/commercial photovoltaic projects have created large-scale demand for mounting kits.

From a regional market perspective, as the world's largest photovoltaic market, China's new photovoltaic installed capacity exceeded 100 million kilowatts in 2023. Distributed photovoltaic brackets (including mounting kits) benefited from the "county-wide promotion" policy, with a market size growth rate of over 30% year-on-year. In overseas markets, driven by policies such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act and the EU's "RepowerEU" plan, the photovoltaic installed capacity in emerging markets such as Latin America and Southeast Asia grew significantly, driving a year-on-year increase of over 50% in China's mounting kits export volume. Overseas markets have become an important growth driver for leading enterprises. In addition, the expansion of industrial/commercial and residential photovoltaic projects in mature markets such as Australia and the United States further boosted the demand for mounting kits.

Accelerated Technological Innovation and Iteration, Significant Improvement in Installation Efficiency and Adaptability

In 2023, technological innovation in the solar panel mounting kits industry focused on "efficiency, lightweight, intelligence, and scenarioization". Many enterprises launched breakthrough products, greatly optimizing the installation process and improving product performance. In the industrial/commercial sector, Antai Solar launched the SnapFit industrial/commercial quick-install system at the All-Energy Australia exhibition in October 2023. Adopting an innovative elastic drive mechanism and pre-assembled component design, the system can complete the entire installation process with only one M8 tool, saving up to 50% of installation time compared with traditional products. It also provides tilt angle options of 0/10/15 degrees, which can increase power generation by 8-10%, and is suitable for single-row and east-west bidirectional installation scenarios to meet the needs of different industrial/commercial projects.

In residential and roof installation scenarios, a number of innovative products made their debut. Chiko USA launched the Rad Mount mounting kit, which is equipped with 6 screws, 6 EPDM gaskets, and 1 T-bolt. It features a simple design and high cost performance, supports installation on roof rafters and decks, and is available in black and silver. EcoFasten's Ultra Grip technology launched an integrated waterproof system, which uses flexible foam to achieve roof waterproofing and can be installed without prying roof tiles, solving the pain point that traditional mounting kits are prone to causing roof leakage. Magerack's Magefoot mounting kit is designed for composite tile roofs, adopting a trackless structure, with pre-assembly characteristics and integrated bonding function, which can be flexibly installed on roof decks or rafters.

In addition, intelligence and lightweight have become important directions for technological upgrading. Intelligent mounting kits are equipped with sensors that can real-time feedback photovoltaic panel operation data to help users optimize power generation efficiency. Lightweight products adopt new materials such as aluminum alloy and carbon fiber, which not only improve durability but also reduce transportation and installation costs, with a service life of more than 20 years for some products. Tracking mounting kits have also been upgraded. NEXTracker launched the XTR 1.5 model tracking mounting kit at the 2023 RE+ exhibition, which can adapt to undulating terrain, reduce project site leveling costs, and upgrade the Hail Pro protection function and TrueCapture Zonal Diffuse shadow detection software to improve the product's hail resistance and power generation stability.

Continuous Policy Empowerment and Gradual Improvement of Industry Standards

In 2023, various countries and regions around the world introduced a number of policies, which not only stimulated the demand for mounting kits through incentive measures but also promoted the high-quality development of the industry through standardization. In terms of policy incentives, governments of various countries reduced solar installation costs through tax credits, subsidies, grants, and other methods, indirectly driving the growth of the mounting kits market. For example, the tax incentives for renewable energy projects under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act and the investment support for photovoltaic infrastructure under the EU's "RepowerEU" plan have effectively stimulated the demand for mounting kits.

In terms of industry standards, many countries and regions have clarified the installation standards and compliance requirements for solar mounting kits. The residential photovoltaic system licensing policy issued by the Denver Municipal Government in the United States stipulates that modifications to solar panel installation hardware do not require re-application for licenses if they do not involve roof structure changes (except for rafter and joist reinforcement), simplifying the modification process of mounting kits and clarifying the electrical safety requirements during installation. Spain requires that residential photovoltaic mounting kits (especially balcony and exterior wall installation types) must be legally certified in accordance with RD 244/2019 regulations, installed by professional and technical personnel, and equipped with electrical protection configurations to ensure safe use. Five Chinese ministries and commissions jointly carried out the 4th batch of intelligent photovoltaic pilot demonstration activities, clearly requiring that photovoltaic systems (including mounting kits) installed on buildings must have an emergency automatic power-off function, be firmly connected to the building itself, and ensure structural, fire, and waterproof safety, further standardizing the application standards of mounting kits.

Intensified Enterprise Competition and Accelerated Global Layout

In 2023, the competitive pattern of the solar panel mounting kits industry showed the characteristics of "concentration of leading enterprises and hierarchical competition". The global market CR5 (market share of the top five enterprises) exceeded 60%, with enterprises such as NEXTracker, Arctech Solar, and Qingyuan Co., Ltd. occupying a dominant position. Among them, NEXTracker became the global leader in tracking mounting kits with a 25% market share, while Arctech Solar firmly held the title of the top brand of tracking mounting kits in China, with a market share of over 20% in 2023.

To enhance competitiveness, enterprises have increased R&D investment and expanded market layout. For international enterprises, NEXTracker cooperated with Unimacts to open a factory in the United States, focusing on the production of torque tubes for tracking mounting kits. This is the sixth factory it has opened since the beginning of 2022, further improving its localized production layout in North America. Array Technologies invested 35 million US dollars to expand its production base in Michigan, USA, and signed a steel supply agreement with Steel Dynamics to ensure the raw material supply of mounting kits. For domestic enterprises, Antai Solar further expanded the Australian market by participating in the All-Energy Australia exhibition and launching a full-scenario mounting kit solution. Arctech Solar established factories in Vietnam and Brazil, and Qingyuan Co., Ltd. accelerated its expansion into European and American markets through EU CE and US UL certifications. In 2023, the average overseas revenue ratio of domestic leading enterprises increased to 35%. In addition, steel enterprises such as ArcelorMittal entered the market across industries, relying on their advantages in the steel industrial chain to provide "steel for photovoltaic brackets + customized processing" services, further enriching the industry's competitive pattern.
