1. Product Recall: Costco Solar Umbrellas Recalled Due to Battery Overheating
In June 2022, China’s Yotrio Group Co., Ltd. issued an announcement recalling a 10-foot solar LED umbrella manufactured by its subsidiary, Sunvilla Corporation, in the United States and Canada. A total of 447,200 units were sold exclusively through Costco, priced between US$130 and US$160, from December 2020 to May 2022.
The direct cause of the recall was that the lithium-ion batteries in the solar panel assembly of the product could overcharge during use or charging, posing a risk of self-ignition or fire. As of the recall announcement, six related complaints had been received, including three cases where the solar panel caught fire while being charged indoors with an AC adapter, two cases where the solar panel assembly overheated and ignited, and one case of personal injury from smoke inhalation. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall notice advising consumers to stop using the product immediately, remove the solar panel assembly, and store it properly away from sunlight and flammable materials. The estimated costs and losses associated with the recall were initially projected at US$10–20 million. It is worth noting that the solar panel assembly was an externally purchased component used only for this umbrella and did not affect the company’s other products.
2. Road Tragedy: Solar Panel Detachment Causes Three Deaths
In May 2022, a coroner in Tasmania, Australia, released a heartbreaking investigation report. In October 2020, near the town of Ross, Tasmania, a driver lost control of their vehicle while trying to avoid a solar panel that had detached from a caravan traveling in the opposite direction, resulting in three deaths and four hospitalizations.
Coroner Simon Cooper noted in the report that while other contributing factors existed, the solar panel flying into the oncoming lane was a “significant factor” – and that these deaths might not have occurred if the panel had remained attached. The investigation revealed that the panel had been installed by a qualified electrician according to the manufacturer’s instructions, but the adhesive used failed, causing the panel to detach from the caravan roof while in motion.
This tragedy prompted deep reflection within the Australian caravan industry on solar panel installation standards. One Tasmanian caravan owner, after inspecting his own vehicle, found that his solar panel was far less secure than he had assumed. He subsequently proposed a dual fixation method – “screws plus adhesive” – combining mechanical fixation with adhesive bonding. Since the accident, Tasmania has tightened pre-registration inspections for external equipment on caravans, and Australia is developing national standards for aftermarket accessories for light vehicles.
3. Counterfeit Mounting Hardware: UK Roofing Solar Installer Investigated for Using Fake Parts
In May 2022, Project Solar, a UK rooftop solar installer, came under joint investigation by industry bodies MCS and NAPIT over design integrity issues. More seriously, the installer was accused of using counterfeit mounting hardware that did not match the products stated on its MCS certificates.
K2 Mounting Systems, a well-known German PV mounting system manufacturer, inspected an installation site after receiving a complaint from a homeowner and confirmed that the components used were not K2 products but counterfeits. Kai Schuberth, a director at K2, stated that they had evidence that Project Solar was selling products that were not K2’s but were using K2’s trademarks, design drawings, and MCS product certification certificates without authorization. The matter had been referred to intellectual property lawyers. Meanwhile, Solar Limpets, a manufacturer of roof hooks, also discovered inferior counterfeit copies of its products on the market. Carl Reynolds, the company’s director, expressed serious concern about the safety of the counterfeit products, saying, “These fakes could pose a serious safety risk to the public.”
Project Solar denied receiving direct complaints from customers and stated that it was willing to respond to the allegations through proper industry channels.
4. Connector Crisis: SunPower Spends US$31 Million Replacing Cracked Connectors
In February 2022, U.S. PV manufacturer SunPower disclosed in a statement that during a quality assessment of its solar modules, it had identified a cracking issue: connectors installed by a third-party factory were cracking over time. Although no incidents had been reported as a result of the quality issue, based on safety concerns, SunPower planned to replace the connectors on most affected units in 2022, with an estimated cost of up to US$31 million. According to industry statistics, the issue affected as many as 1,000 commercial and industrial PV sites, totaling approximately 9 MW of capacity. However, the company stated that residential products were not affected.
Connectors are critical components that link the PV module junction box cables to the rest of the solar system. Quality issues with connectors can lead to current leakage, arcing, reduced current transmission capacity, and even fires. PV systems are exposed to wind, rain, intense sunlight, and extreme temperature fluctuations, so connectors must be waterproof, heat-resistant, UV-resistant, touch-proof, and capable of carrying high currents. The U.S. Electrical Safety Foundation has also noted that connector problems can cause fires and personal injury, yet there is currently no unified design standard for connectors in the industry. Compatibility issues often arise when products from different manufacturers are mixed.
